Jamie Olive’s passion for food began at the East Kent College restaurant, where he studied for 3 years.
Whilst studying for his NVQ in catering he gained experience both in the kitchen and front of house. Upon leaving college Jamie’s style and passion for cooking quickly caught the eye of the then head chef of the Sands Hotel and so began his career. He became Commis chef and was quickly promoted to Junior Chef, whereupon he gained a 2 Rosette Standard.
Jamie briefly worked at a popular hotel in Canterbury before returning to the Sands as Sous Chef. In 2021 Jamie’s distinguished career was rewarded by being promoted to Head Chef
Born in Margate, Jamie is a local boy through and through. He knows what both locals and holiday makers want to eat when they visit the coast. And when it comes to the menu, Jamie’s love of barbequed food was the inspiration behind Sands Bar & Grill. As Jamie says ‘it’s good local quality food, honestly cooked and done well’. A varied menu, from Moroccan lamb to South American ribs, lovingly cooked over his chargrill in the kitchen.

The airy and contemporary Sands Bar and Grill restaurant enjoys unparalleled views over Margate Sands. The large west-facing terrace offers the option of al fresco dining all year round when the weather is kind! The main entrance is located at 42 High Street, and we are open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner for both residents and non-residents alike. Our chef offers a modern European menu inspired by both local and seasonal produce. Beautifully presented dishes and service that is attentive, but not intrusive, your experience will be one to remember.
Our A La Carte Menu is available every day and is designed to ensure we use seasonal, fresh and local ingredients carefully tailored by our chef to create an impressive and enticing dining experience. All of our menus are regularly updated with exciting new dishes.
Our Bar and Grill Restaurant has a contemporary yet comfortable atmosphere featuring high ceiling’s, intricate Victorian cornicing and floor-to-ceiling windows. In the bar, sink into our large armchairs whilst sipping on a locally sourced tipple of your choice.
The restaurant features bespoke banquette seating and elegant high back chairs making it the perfect place to relax. Our modern cuisine is accompanied by our locally sourced wine list including local suppliers Hush Heath and Chapel Down.
